How you can ensure a safe exchange of child custody

On Behalf of | Nov 23, 2018 | Family Law

The exchange of child custody can be one of the most excruciating circumstances for parents and children. When the parents have trouble getting along it can rub off on the children. The best interest of the child should always be taken into account when exchanging custody. There’s a lot that goes into making the custody exchange safe for everyone in your family.

You need to consider bringing a third party with you during the exchange, and this goes for both parents. If you know a good conversation cannot occur without arguing, then it’s time for each of you to bring a friend or relative to help facilitate the exchange for you.

Try to pick a neutral location for the exchange of child custody so that both parents feel comfortable. The best places for child custody exchange include the public library, the local firehouse, the police station, a public park or any other location where there will be a lot of people present.

Don’t rule out the thought of setting a schedule for the exchanges. Making a schedule will help your child adjust accordingly because they will know when and where they will see the other parent. Stick to the schedule you create so that you do not upset the other parent.

The best way to handle the exchange of child custody is to act like an adult at all times. Follow the custody arrangement set forth by the court and don’t stray from it. The more you follow it, the better off you and your child will be in the long run.

Where and when you exchange custody of your children can go a long way in making sure everyone feels safe and comfortable. You don’t want to put your children in an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation, especially if you and the other parent cannot go minutes without arguing.
